LAUDON CASTLE

The baroque water palace, surrounded by a splendid park, was first mentioned in a document as early as 1130 and has always been the centrepiece of weddings. Emperor Friedrich III presented this charming fairy-tale castle to his wife Eleonore, infanta of Portugal, on the occasion of their wedding.

In April 1708, Elisabeth Christine, Maria Theresia’s mother, spent two nights before her wedding to Karl III here. There is a commemorative plaque with a Latin inscription on the palace’s staircase to remember this event: "This is where the Spanish Queen spent two nights before she happily married Karl. Her important presence created great splendour. So let this house be dear to us."

Field Marshal Gideon von Laudon acquired the Palace in 1776 and gave it its name.
